]]> http://www.pilgrimfriend.com/archives/2204/feed 1 Backpack Trip http://www.pilgrimfriend.com/archives/1875 http://www.pilgrimfriend.com/archives/1875#comments Thu, 13 Aug 2009 20:52:18 +0000 Shaun Walker http://www.pilgrimfriend.com/?p=1875 After having such a great success with camping, I decided I wanted to do a backpack trip.  The idea was for me to survey a place and see if it would work out to have a men’s backpack trip from Highlands.  Although the 1.5 mile hike in wasn’t long, it was beautiful.  The next day (Saturday) we took a hike up to Harmonica Arch.  It was about .8 mile long hike that gained at least 800 ft of elevation.  Needless to say, the climb up was VERY steep.  The views at the top made it all worth it.

I must say, camping by a crystal clear, freezing cold mountain stream, hearing the wind in the trees, and not seeing anybody other than our group (two brothers from church came along) for 24 hours was a welcome retreat.  I can’t wait to do it again.

Michael has a great camera and knows how to use it.  He gave me lots of pictures.  I picked the ones that seemed to summarize the trip best.  Enjoy!

Good job everybody!

I was especially proud of my dear little wife.  About a month ago Shannon began working hard at building up to a 3.1 mile distance.  She faithfully persisted and carved out time to run amidst the many demands of being a wife and mother of two toddlers.  She did a great job today and finished her first official 5K race.  Great job Shannon! I’m so very, very proud of you! This year, like every other year, I have much to be thankful for – Shannon, you are at the top of the list. ; )

Happy Birthday Shannon!  You are an amazing wife, a terrific mother, and dear best friend.  I thank the Lord for you often and consider myself blessed beyond measure.

]]> http://www.pilgrimfriend.com/archives/979/feed 0 I Survived The 2008 Colorado Relay http://www.pilgrimfriend.com/archives/873 http://www.pilgrimfriend.com/archives/873#comments Tue, 16 Sep 2008 17:51:42 +0000 Shaun Walker http://www.pilgrimfriend.com/wordpress/?p=873 This past Friday and Saturday, myself and nine others from Highlands Baptist Church set out on a quest to run the 2008 Colorado Relay.  This is a 174 mile relay race that goes over 3 mountain passes from Georgetown to Carbondale.  Each runner has 3 sections of varying length.  I ran a total of about 22 miles.  All ten runners got through without any major injuries and we were able to cross the finish line together (which is a relay requirement to finish). 

We met at 3:30am Friday morning, drove to Georgetown, CO and our first runner started off at 5:33am.  The weather was horrible – cold with heavy rain that turned to sleet and snow the higher up the pass they went.  The top of Guanella and Georgia pass each had at least four inches of snow.  We eventually got a break in the weather by Friday afternoon and had cold, but clear skies through Friday night into Saturday.  

The team did a great job.  Everyone did their best, ran their hearts out, and encouraged everyone on the way.  If you want to learn more about our experience you can find some pictures and testimonials at the links provided.  Thanks for your prayers and support!
